As students predicted, experts also rated JEE Advanced 2025, conducted by IIT Kanpur on May 18, to be more difficult than last year’s exam. Based on the registrations, this year saw an increase in interest in the exam as well. A total of 1,87,223 candidates registered for the exam, which was held in two shifts: Paper 1 in the morning and Paper 2 in the afternoon.
As for the papers, experts overpredicted the difficulty in Physics and underpredicted that in Mathematics. In both papers, mathematics proved to be the most challenging section, and great patience and brainstorming were required to solve multi-step problems, especially in Paper 1. At the same time, it consisted of cumbersome integer-type problems requiring precise quantitative answers within a limited timeframe. Furthermore, physics was at a moderate level compared to chemistry, which made it easier to compare.
It is not an overstatement that Paper 2 performed the best of all the papers. The concepts tested during the exam were impactful in assessing the students understanding. Physics attracted higher marks in this session for its more conceptual and lengthier question set. In addition to that, students found chemistry mildly interesting, although it was overly concentrated on organic chemistry. Leaving mathematics aside, which again proved its worth by being the most challenging segment, the bearable level seen in the other subjects maintained the high overall exam average, which was detrimental to the paper’s grade.
Both students and faculty believed that JEE Advanced 2025 was more difficult than the 2024 version, particularly the Mathematics and Physics portions. Consequently, the cutoff is anticipated to drop significantly this year, with experts estimating it could reach 90 to 95 marks out of 360, a considerable reduction from last year’s 109-mark cutoff.
In conclusion, JEE Advanced 2025 once again solidified its position as one of the toughest entrance examinations in India. Its Mathematics and Physics sections presented the steepest challenges for most students, while Chemistry remained the more accessible subject throughout both papers.
