Apple Plans To Launch iPhone 17 Series With "Air" Ultra Thin Variant And Major Camera Updates

Apple looks ready for the release of the iPhone 17 lineup, scheduled for this September, as members of the industry report about the new ultra-slim version, iPhone 17 Air. This new series is expected to come with four devices, starting with the ‘standard iPhone 17’, then the ‘advanced iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max’, and finally, the ‘all-new iPhone 17 Air’, which is rumoured to have its sleek design and lightweight body as its selling point.

The new iPhone 17 Air is expected to maintain a slim profile with an unparalleled thickness of 5.5mm. This will make it the slimmest iPhone to be produced to date. Although this model will probably have a sole 48MP rear camera aimed towards casual shooters, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max will feature flagship-level camera upgrades. These high-end models are expected to have three 48MP sensors: a primary lens, an upgraded ultra-wide, and a telephoto unit. A new Tetraprism Telephoto lens is also expected to be introduced, providing higher-level zoom and sharper images than previously offered. Apple may also introduce an MVC, allowing users to control light intake and depth of field mechanically, manually adjusting for blurring on the bordered image, like professional cameras do.

At next month’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple is expected to unveil iOS 19, which has many features. One of the anticipated new functionalities is an AI-based battery management system that works similarly to the Android version, learning user behaviour over time to optimise battery consumption. This enhancement is especially welcomed considering the predicted slimmer battery in the iPhone 17, although it will be accessible on all iPhones that support it.

On the other hand, Apple is reportedly focused on the newer iOS 19 as it shifts its narratives toward more holistic improvements for the WWDC 2025, moving away from major AI announcements. Furthermore, the company is separating more of its overarching AI goals from its Siri voice assistant legacy. These AI aims include a virtual health coach and more comprehensive app integrations.

With all this in mind, the new iPhone 17 series will further enhance mobile photography while advancing usability, more intelligent battery management, and improved software. The new phones are set to be released in September, and more information will be available at the June WWDC.
